SCHOOL OF MEDICAL ASSISTANTS (SOMA)
A sick berth school for the training of personnel recruited for the Sick Berth branch was established in Sewri, Mumbai in 1943. The school was re-located to INHS Asvini in July 1954. With a change in the designation of Sick berth Assistant (SBA) to a more appropriate designation of Medical Assistants (MA) in October 1967, the school was re-named as the School of Medical Assistants (SOMA). The school underwent formidable evolution to its current state of the art facilities with ultra-modern campus. It has been designed futuristically to meet the increasing training demand.
The school of Medical Assistants (SOMA) is CAT 'A' training
establishment of Indian Navy. The school conducts various courses which
includes basic as well as specialized training and offers diplomas in
many paramedical disciplines which are affiliated to Maharashtra
University of Health Sciences. SOMA also undertake training of
paramedics in Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Emergency and
Trauma management. The institute oversees the entire professional
development of a paramedic right from his enrollment to retirement by
imparting training at various stages of his career.
