Located along the Western coast of India at Kochi, under Southern Naval Command, SNOM is one of the premier training school of the Indian Navy. It imparts professional multi-level training to the officers and sailors of the Indian Navy in the field of Meteorology & Oceanography besides trainees from other sister services and friendly foreign countries. This school, located inside the premier Naval Air Station INS Garuda, has a lot to offer you in terms of theoretical and practical training on all aspects of Meteorology & Oceanography (METOC). The most important takeaway from the school, would be the invaluable experience of the school's faculty in METOC operations, maintenance and exploitation of various tools which will be whole-heartedly shared with you. Your dedication, sincerity and diligence, at every step during the course, will help you get the best out of the training at the school.
The school is recognized as a 'Centre for Excellence in Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences' by the renowned Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), Kochi and many of the long duration professional courses are affiliated with CUSAT for the award of Degree / Diploma certificates. Captain A Vidya Sagar, is presently the Officer-in-Charge of the School.
Mission Statement: To explore, exploit and expand the training domains in the fields of Atmospheric and Ocean Sciences by incorporating the latest developments in the relevant/associated fields making every trainee fully aware of the impact & the influence of atmospheric and ocean environment thereby empowering them to accomplish their tasks with professionalism & finesse to support naval.
Motto: To train personnel to deliver quality operational support services by constantly updating training to keep pace with changes in technology and science and to remain a 'Centre of Excellence' in the domain of atmosphere and ocean studies.
Crest: The crest depicts all the ingredients that cause seasons. It describes Seasons shine through the times. The crest represents the Sea, the atmosphere in blue colour, the sun, cloud, rain and the lightning; the basic components of Meteorological Science.
Location and Climate: SNOM is located inside the Naval Base at Kochi, 04 Kms from the Ernakulam City, in the picturesque southern state of Kerala. The weather is tropical maritime and temperature varies between 220 - 400 Celsius. The South West monsoons bring heavy showers from June to September and the North-East Monsoon season sees a lot of thunderstorms/showers during October, November and December. Pre-Monsoon season is from Mar - May and is generally hot and humid.
